Three New Zealand movies have been bought at the Cannes film festival which ended in France last weekend.
Satire movie Toy Love, by Harry Sinclair; martial arts musical Tongan Ninja, by Jason Stutter; and Christine Jeffs' adaptation of the Kirsty Gunn novel Rain had all sold in a "difficult market", NewZealand Film Commission sales chief Kathleen Drumm said in a statement today.
Toy Love had sold to the United States, Canada, Portugal and Russia, and had been invited to several international film festivals.
Tongan Ninja sold to Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and France.
Rain, which was chosen for the Directors Fortnight at Cannes last year and is currently screening in the United States, sold to Hong Kong, Britain, Russia and Portugal.
Ms Drumm said the commission was "thrilled" to see New Zealand movies being acknowledged overseas despite the tight market.
"Buyers are more discerning than ever, prices are lower and the competition is intense."
