Teen in custody after stabbing

A woman has stab wounds to her face after an incident which sparked a stand-off between a teenager and armed police this afternoon.

The Armed Offenders Squad and police were called to a reported assault at Whitcombe St in Temuka, near Timaru, just before midday.

A 19-year-old man at the scene agreed to come out of the house and give himself up after negotiating with officers.

He was taken into custody and is expected to face charges, police say.

A female was treated by ambulance staff at the scene for stab wounds to the face.

Her injuries are not described as serious.
