Teachers ask for more money, less time teaching

Secondary school teachers have lodged a claim with the Government asking for more money and less teaching time.

The Post Primary Teachers' Association wants a flat rate salary increase of $2500 per teacher per year for the next three years.

The claim includes a clause which would limit the number of hours spent in front of the class.

At the moment teachers spend around 25 hours per week teaching, but the PPTA would like that reduced to 20 hours over the next three years.

The PPTA says an extra 600 teachers are needed per year for the next three years to cope with a looming teacher shortage and more work caused by the introduction of the new school qualification, the National Certificate of Educational Achievement.
