A baking and pastries student at UCOL has landed herself a $100 Bar Salute voucher for her sweet burger. The Wairarapa Times-Age, Wellington on a Plate-inspired foodie contest asked readers to submit their own burger designs.
Kirsten Lewis, of Masterton, made a sweet burger with a waffle base, ice creamand fresh fruit and drizzled with chocolate sauce. Ms Lewis said she loves studying cooking because of all the different food she gets to make - Indian, Moroccan and French to name a few.
One day, she hopes to open a 1950s-style diner in Masterton.
Bar Salute chef Travis Clive-Griffin said Kirsten's dessert burger had a point of difference, which he likes. "She has obviously thought about a few integral things that make up a good dish. This is really an 'open burger', the colours on the plate look good and the crunch of the waffle provides nice contrast of texture. Well done!"
