SPCA upset at sow stall vote outcome

The SPCA is prepared to mount one of its biggest campaigns to ensure that sow stalls are banned.

Pig farmers yesterday voted to phase out the small stalls, which confine pregnant sows for up to 16 weeks, by 2012.

But they also want to retain the option of using the 200cm by 60cm pens for four weeks after mating.

SPCA national president Peter Mason says he is disgusted with the decision and accuses the farmers of trying to mislead the public.

"They are talking about a phase-out by 2012 when in fact they intend continuing to use the stalls after that date for the first four weeks of pregnancy. We believe that is totally unacceptable on welfare grounds."
