Wairarapa families may be enjoying masses of pumpkin soup after the final of the Mammoth Pumpkin Growing Competition was held in Masterton over the weekend.
The children's competition started in November, and special seeds were imported from the US for the event.
The giant pumpkins were presented at GardenBarn onSaturday for the weigh-in of the competition, run by Rotary Club of Masterton.
Club member Alan Kirkham said despite the dismal growing conditions this year, they were pleased with how the day went overall. "Rotary Club decided that they would run an annual pumpkin growing competition - just as a community activity really," he said.
He said the competition was a "bit of fun" and a good way to teach children about growing vegetables.
Club member Roddy McKenzie thanked all of the participants and helpers, and gave a special vote of thanks to Laurie and Carol Hatchard of the GardenBarn, for their generous sponsorship of the competition. Mr Hatchard congratulated the winners for producing fine pumpkins in spite of the weather.
