The southern men had a very successful day at Mahunga at the expense of Eketahuna winning 8/4 in the final round of the Marquis Shield.
Bob Goodley, Chef de Mission, not wanting to hand over the Workman Cup, gave his teammates a serious talking to. They responded to his call ?
with wins to Lance Phelps, Douglas Clark and a handy half from George Kirk in the Seniors had Bob dancing on the green delighted that Martinborough's name would once again be on the Workman Cup for a consecutive year, albeit jointly with Carterton. For the Intermediates it was Postie Ash Reed who recorded a win, with another handy half from the man in charge Bob. The Junior members reconditioning programme reaped rewards with a clean sweep ? Neil Smith, Russell Swain, Garry Paterson and Sam Cooke all winning their matches.
The Junior Pennants Competition also had their last match against Castlepoint. After making sure Mum had been given her breakie in bed for Mothers Day, Jayden Mills, Sean Pearless, Aaron and Jason Van Zanten headed to the beach and won by a narrow margin. Great finish to the season, recording some very good wins along the way.
Weekend
Numbers for Saturday are steadily returning to the halcyon years of the 80's, which is fantastic for Club competition. Some of the names mentioned were younger back then, but age is no barrier to golf as the mature and not so mature battled it out in last Saturdays Stoke Comp.
The star of the day was Stu Taplin with a stunning 77 to produce a nett 65. Driving straight helped along with taking out the putting comp with 28 putts including a two. This result left Doug Clark and George Marshall in second place both on nett 67. Bob Goodley also scored a two, was one shot back with nett 68. Terry Blacktop also putted well to get the third two of the day.
A small field on Sunday gave honours to John Taylor nett 69. Martin Napier taking the Putting with 32 putts and a solitary two to Derek Stephen.
Wednesday ladies
There were a good number entered in the 36-hole stroke Play Championships on Wednesday, thus ensuring some healthy competition. Mental stamina is a priority playing two rounds in a day, and for some of us with short attention spans, well, somehow those elusive even rounds continue to evade us. Not so for the winner of the Best Gross and holder of the Donald Cup, Sherry Weatherstone with a combined Gross 162. Player of the Day however, went to Bindy Mc Leod ? the Bridesmaid ? second in the Gross with 165 and 2nd in the nett on 139. Jenny Wilkie having a game of two halves in third with a Gross 175.
The battle for Best Nett was like Boxing, with scoring going down to the wire. Five shots separated first to fourth, however it was Rosie Harrington who pipped her Hautotara sister by one shot to win the Jenkins Tray with a best-combined nett score of 138. Congratulations Rosie, keep up the good play! Third Susie Matthews with nett 140 and fourth Mary Desbonnets with 142. All sub Par nett rounds.
Twos to Winners -Rosie Harrington and Sherry Weatherstone, and to Robyn Blackett, Jane Cooke and Jenny Boyne.
The Rest of the Best played a Stableford round. First was Shirley Rattray with 40pts. Second equal Larraine Nix and Jill Colton with 38 pts and Super Gran June Hume sneaked in third place with 36 points.
9 holers
A good field for the Sue Bunt Best Nett Competition, and it was nice to have our lunch break with the nine holers and catch up with you.
First Di Bunny, second Mary Herrick and third Ann Renall.
Karen Shaw won the Wairarapa Livestock Nearest the Pin on 8 again this week. Well done.
Thursday Club
Last Thursday's weather forecast must have put a few players off, for the numbers were slightly down, but things couldn't have been too bad ? we had seven players who scored eight twos - work that one out!
Bob Goodley made his presence felt, not only scoring Nearest the Pin, but getting his two as well. He was joined by six other players ? Graham Jacobson, Terry Blacktop, Ray Matthews, Lance Phelps, Robert Clark and (who else?) Roger Parkinson with two twos.
In fact, young Roger was the Player of the Day, coming in with 41 points. If truth be told, the scores were not high, the only other player getting 40 or more stableford points was the even younger Warren Colton whose scores can be, on occasion, somewhat unpredictable.
Bob Goodley gave Roger a run for his money, competing for the player of the day honour, coming in with 38 points. He shared fourth place with Graham Jacobson.
This week's stableford average was 34 points. Let's hope that next week the results show that the thought of a substantial prize in the Thursday club's Autumn Tournament will greatly improve that average. Watch this space!
Club Open Days
It is important to support the other Clubs in the Wairarapa and Wellington regions on their Open Days and Club Tournaments to ensure the success of our own. Like duck shooting, there's plenty of opportunity during the month of May. Last Thursday Sherry W and Heather Draper had a great catch up at Mahunga were delighted with their Third placing, commenting on the tonic ? the gin going to a good home. This Thursday some of us are at Featherston playing with our other halves, not sure if this is what I had in mind when I encouraged the other half to play golf in place of rugby. Ladies make a note in you busy diaries for Martinborough's Open day on Wednesday June 6. Email entries to jane@reddeckchair.co.nz or call 06 308 8881.
