Auckland student radio station 95bFM has been fined $250 by the Broadcasting Standards Authority for playing a song with explicit lyrics about oral sex.
The song, You Suck, by the Yeastie Girls, was broadcast on Sunday, April 30, about 8.30 pm during the station's Around The Bend gay and lesbian show.
The
timing of the broadcast, its target audience, the satirical nature of the song, and a history of complaints by the complainant, the Credo Society, were raised by bFM in its defence.
The society described the broadcast as "depraved material." It said standards had declined on the station over the past decade, and expressed concern on behalf of parents "about the proliferation of ... harmful material bombarding young people."
The authority ruled that the song was "unusually graphic" and exceeded community expectations of good taste and decency.
