Police said the blaze sparked speculation on social media, but warned people against letting such chatter become a distraction.
"The social media comments are being assessed as part of the investigation," Detective Sergeant Richard Lang said. "However, it is not the only line of enquiry, and it is extremely important that people are not influenced by the comments to the point where they don't report information they have which might be relevant."

Police said anybody with information about the fire, "no matter how insignificant it may seem" should phone Rotorua Police on 07 348 0099.
People could also provide information to anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
