Rotorua school fire may have been delibrately lit - police

A fire at a Rotorua school this morning may have been deliberately lit, police say.

The fire at Rotorua Girls' High School was first reported to police at about 1.20am.

Police said two classrooms at the school on Old Taupo Road were "significantly damaged" in the blaze.

The fire was now being treated as a possible arson and police wanted information from the community.

Police said the blaze sparked speculation on social media, but warned people against letting such chatter become a distraction.

"The social media comments are being assessed as part of the investigation," Detective Sergeant Richard Lang said. "However, it is not the only line of enquiry, and it is extremely important that people are not influenced by the comments to the point where they don't report information they have which might be relevant."

Police said anybody with information about the fire, "no matter how insignificant it may seem" should phone Rotorua Police on 07 348 0099.

People could also provide information to anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.

Police said they wanted to hear from any local residents who had CCTV systems, which may have captured images of use to the investigation.
