Britain's equivalent of the Oscars is shaping up as a trans-Tasman battle with Peter Jackson's Lord of The Rings and Australian Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge each receiving 12 nominations for the BAFTA awards.
In the best film category, LOTR and Moulin are up against French romantic comedy Amelie, A Beautiful Mind and animated movie Shrek.
Robert Altman's Gosford Park received nine nominations overall, as did Amelie, while Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone received seven nominations and Shrek received six.
Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in the Lord Of The Rings, received a nomination for best actor, as did Russell Crowe for his part in A Beautiful Mind which has already won him a Golden Globe.
Nicole Kidman, who scooped a top Golden Globe award this year for Moulin Rouge, received a best actress nomination for ghost movie The Others.
Jacksons' The Lord Of The Rings movie recently received four Golden Globe nominations but failed to win one.
The Bafta winners will be announced on February 24, a month before the Academy Awards.
