An online pet registry launched today will help track lost pets.

Animal welfare group Paw Justice is hoping Kiwis will join up to its Patch Up Your Pet site.

Pet owners can buy a $10 tag containing a unique code that attaches to a pet's collar.

If the animal becomes lost, anyone can retrieve the owner's contact details by entering the code at the Paw Justice website.

The tags go on sale later this year.
