An elderly woman is dead after being hit by a truck in Hamilton.
The 91-year-old woman was at a pedestrian crossing controlled by traffic lights on Ruakura Rd, Hamilton East, when the crash happened.
Waikato police Senior Sergeant Simon Cherry said the road has since reopened and the serious crash and commercial vehicle investigation units are now investigating, along with CIB staff.
He also confirmed the woman had been a resident at the adjacent Hilda Ross Retirement Village. The crash occurred just outside the village at 11.14am.
Police were now contacting the woman's next of kin.
Photos from the scene show a Toll Group-branded truck-and-trailer stopped at the crossing. A person's walking frame is also visible.
Toll Group confirmed one of their trucks had been involved in the crash.
"Toll is deeply saddened to learn of the death of a pedestrian involving a Toll vehicle this morning in Hamilton," a spokesman said.
"Our thoughts are with the victim's family and we offer our deepest condolences. We are fully co-operating with the investigation and offering counselling to support our affected employees."
No one from the retirement village was available to speak with the Herald this afternoon.
