Music @ St Matthew's is returning after an 18-month long hiatus, led by a man who thinks everyone should hear the church's glorious organ.
Convenor Ray Stedman said the organ has become a little bit foreign to modern people, and Music @ St Matthew's is about people rediscovering it as an instrument. "They've got to rediscover it, not only does it do very good classical pipe organ, it's a theatre organ, and in an orchestral and instrumental sense, it appeals to a broad section."
St Matthew's old pipe organ was replaced by a Rodgers digital organ about 10 years ago, and Mr Stedman's predecessor April Bamford decided it should be shown off to the public.
She organised a series of concerts each winter for nine years, though after she bowed out in 2010 the concerts were put on hold - until now.
Mr Stedman has organised a one-off concert on September 22 and is working hard to get a 2013 programme in place, which will bring organists from the UK and around New Zealand to play. "Some of the concerts are heavier than others, but we have always found them to be interesting, appealing to a cross-section of people."
