Handyman Steve Wakely will be back at work after the Christmas holidays - and that, he says, makes him the happiest man in Auckland.
Only weeks ago the Titirangi father of three was devastated by the news that he was to be laid off from his job of twoyears.
He was one of nine workers to lose their jobs in a restructuring move by Transfield, which is contracted to maintain Housing New Zealand properties.
It was the second time he had been laid off at Christmas, and he received no redundancy money.
But after Mr Wakely's plight was reported in the Herald, Onehunga manufacturer Won-door offered him a job making and installing its concertina folding doors. He said he had received 13 offers of interviews.
