One dead after car goes over bridge on West Coast

One person has died after a car went over the side of a bridge in a serious crash on the West Coast.

The crash, on the Haast Highway at Karangarua, involved one vehicle.

It happened just before 5pm at Mai Mai Creek bridge, between Hunts Beach Rd and Hobson Creek Rd.

A spokesperson for St John confirmed that one person had died in the incident.

Police are attending at the scene.

Rescue helicopters were initially called, and then stood down.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

A police spokesperson said further details would be released as they became available.
