Taupo police are searching for the body of a woman thought to have disappeared over Huka Falls this week.
The person is believed to be a 35-year-old Tauranga woman holidaying in the area with her family.
Senior Constable Barry Shepherd, of the Taupo police, said sightseers at the popular tourist spot saw a person enter the river off the embankment about 11am on Tuesday.
"The person was carried upstream by the water. More people saw the person get swept under the bridge," Mr Shepherd said.
"The person then went over the falls ... people on the viewing platform above the falls saw them reappear at the bottom where they seemed to bob up and down for a minute.
"They then disappeared from view and have not been seen since.
"At this point we are searching for a body. We have assumed the person has drowned."
Searches of the falls area yesterday failed to find a body.
