A 30-year-old Taranaki man who had a finger surgically removed to replace a thumb lost in a work accident was awarded half of an $8000 fine imposed yesterday against his employer, Taranaki Sawmills.
The company had been charged with failing to provide a safe workplace.
Occupational Safety and Health regional service manager Patrick Cashmore said the employer should either have ensured that a stop button could not be overridden or have fitted a light-beam sensor.
