An Auckland man rescued by fellow surfers off a Far North beach died in Auckland Hospital's critical care unit last night.
The man -- whose name had not been released this morning -- was surfing near Tauroa Pt, at the base of Ninety Mile Beach, when he struck trouble about 9am on Friday.
Chief instructor for the surf rescue unit at Ahipara, Peter Tepania, said the man, aged in his 50s, was pulled ashore by fellow surfers after he failed to surface.
Mr Tepania said a four-wheel drive vehicle took the man to Shipwreck Bay. He was in a serious condition and was flown by helicopter to Whangarei Hospital, and later transferred to Auckland.
