Staff at a pool and leisure centre in South Auckland tried desperately to save one of their members this morning after they suffered a medical event.
Despite their efforts, the person - understood to be a man - died at the Manurewa Pool and Leisure Centre, on Sykes Rd, justafter 7am.
Auckland Council's head of active recreation, Dave Stewart, said: "We are deeply saddened to confirm that a loyal and long-time member of the Manurewa Pool and Leisure Centre passed away suddenly at the centre this morning.
"The cause of their death is still not known. However, staff spent a considerable amount of time trying to resuscitate them without success."
"Our deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones."
Stewart also paid tribute to the staff members at the site this morning, who he said acted quickly during a difficult time.
"These types of incidents are always distressing for staff and members of the public and, as a result, we have closed the centre until further notice to support our people," he said.
A message by the affected pool and leisure centre was posted to its Facebook page telling the public that they would be closed.
"Due to unforeseen circumstances, our centre is closed until further notice. We do apologise."
