A home-made pipe bomb appears to be responsible for the Defence Force bomb squad being called to a quaint Morningside address in Auckland this morning.
A bomb disposal expert was called to a Finch St property after reports of a suspicious package prompted the police to call in NZDF.
Newstalk ZB reporter Natasha Jojoa Burling visited the street and said she was told by a neighbour that someone had put a "pipe bomb", an improvised explosive device, in a mailbox.
She visited the scene and found an exploded mailbox.
"It looks as though it's been blown apart, it is basically hanging flat off the stand.
"There is a paper bag full of bits of letterbox including the number and the door and what looks to be a fuse with a wire on it."
Police said they received a report of vandalism at a Finch St address in Morningside, where a cordon was installed.
The cordon was in place from 8am to 10.30am
The NZDF Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was notified after the suspicious item was found.
There was no risk to the public and the cordon was in place is a precaution, she said.
More to come.
