Eight people have been injured in a horror crash between two vans in South Auckland.

Police said four of those injured are children, aged between 6 and 13.

One child was sent to Auckland's Starship Hospital via helicopter in a critical condition.

Another patient, in a serious condition, was also taken to Starship via helicopter.

Two other children are in a moderate condition.

Four adults are also being treated for moderate injuries.

Senior Sergeant Dave Readings said initial enquiries indicate that some of the occupants from one of the vans were not wearing seat belts.

One person in a moderate condition was transferred via ambulance to a local medical centre.

Fire and Emergency NZ have confirmed the accident happened at 11.25am at the intersection of Gun Club and Schlaepfer Rds.
