A callous thief has knocked on the door of an elderly man before punching him in the head and stomach and stealing cash.

Police are hunting the attacker after the home invasion in a Salvation Army flat in Enfield St, Hamilton.

Waikato Senior Sergeant Charles Burgess said the victim heard a knock at the door just before 9pm yesterday.

"He opened the door and was punched by a man in the face and stomach to the ground. The man stepped over him and went into his home and took cash from his wallet and left."


The victim is understood to be in Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.

"He's bruised but okay."

The Herald understands the man had lived in the flat for about eight years.
