Long queues of traffic are backed up in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui after a motorcyclist was injured in a crash.

A police media spokeswoman said the crash, which was called in to police about 9.35am, involved a single motorcyclist.

A reporter on the Tauranga Harbour Bridge said traffic was backed up as far as she could see.

Tauranga City Council said in an earlier alert that Hewletts Rd heading toward the harbour bridge was closed from Totara St.

The council has since advised that the road reopened, but traffic remained queued back to Maunganui Road.

The council was advising drivers to avoid the Hewletts Rd and the harbour bridge until at least after midday.
