UPDATED 8.30am: The woman struck by a train in Tauranga last night is in a critical but stable condition in hospital this morning.
A Tauranga Hospital spokeswoman said the woman was a 48-year-old Tauranga woman.
The woman is understood to have suffered very serious life-threatening injuries.

A woman has been transferred to hospital with critical injuries after she was hit by a train near Ngatai and Western Roads in Otumoetai this evening.
A reporter at the scene said the woman was found under the middle of the train, but it was not clear if she had been struck at the front of the train nor the circumstances of the accident. The woman was understood to have suffered very serious life-threatening injuries.
The serious crash unit was in attendance.
EARLIER: A woman suffered life-threatening injuries when she was struck by a train in Tauranga this evening.
Emergency services were called to Ngatai Rd in Bellevue after the pedestrian, believed to be in her 40s, was struck about 8.30pm.
She was taken to hospital.
Police said the circumstances of the incident were not known at this time.
