A piece of equipment on a drilling truck which caught fire caused smoke to pour down a central Wellington street earlier today.

Central fire communications shift manager Chris Dalton said a fire truck that was responding to another job noticed the fire on Featherston St at 1.23pm.

They called in for another truck to attend to the fire, he said.

Two trucks then arrived at the scene, and found a piece of equipment on a drilling truck was on fire.
