A man will appear in Auckland District Court today after a stolen car crashed into a police station early today.

The vehicle had been stolen from a Panmure property and crashed into the Glen Innes Police Station around 4am today, police said.

The driver and his female companion ran from the scene but were found by police.

The driver suffered a minor head injury in the crash.

The driver, who was forbidden from driving, was found to be over the legal breath alcohol limit, police said.

A 20-year-old man was to appear in Auckland District Court today charged with resisting police, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, excess breath alcohol and being a forbidden and unlicensed driver.

Auckland city district commander Superintendent Richard Chambers said although the car's resting place could be seen as comical, the fact a young man without a drivers' licence was allegedly driving on city roads while intoxicated was no laughing matter.

"The events of early this morning that ended up literally colliding with police on a range of levels are stark reminders that law abiding motorists are always going to be at risk when there are others who choose to abandon their legal responsibilities," he said.
