A man in his 60s has died in a crash on the Northern Motorway, north of Auckland.

Police say a man driving a car which hit the median barrier has died at the scene. He was the only person in the vehicle.

The crash occurred in the southbound lane by Rosedale Rd, just south of Albany.

The man who died was about 60 years old, an ambulance spokeswoman said.

The two centre lanes, both southbound and northbound, were blocked as a result of the crash, a police statement said.

The northbound lane was due to be reopened about 6.30pm, police said, while the southbound lane would be blocked until about 7.30pm.

All emergency services responded to the scene.
