A sleeping household had a lucky escape when a stolen car nearly ploughed into their Nelson bedroom.

The Holden station wagon had been stolen from a nearby address just minutes before the 3am crash yesterday police say.

It became airborne before hitting some trees, narrowly missing a bedroom in which the homeowners were sleeping and coming to rest in the carport of the house.

The driver spoke to the homeowners briefly, said police, before jumping a fence and running away.

He is described as a European in his mid-20s, about 1.8 metres and of skinny build. He had shaggy brown collar-length hair and was wearing baggy jeans and a dark coloured top.

Anyone who was in the area at the time or has information that may identify the driver should contact Nelson police on 03 546 3840, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
