The Easter bunny has arrived in leaps and bounds at the Auckland SPCA - it has up to 40 rabbits available for adoption.

The hopping balls of fluff have come from all walks of life. Some have been abandoned and others have escaped from their hutches.

About 23 bunnies were living at the SPCA this weekend and a further 17 had been placed in foster care while waiting for permanent homes.

The Auckland SPCA has launched a half-price adoption promotion after being overloaded with animals, including dogs and cats. The promotion will run until April 22.

SPCA's animal attendant Justine Somerville warned potential buyers that rabbits needed a lot of care and shouldn't be adopted just because it is Easter.

"We push that chocolate is just for Easter time but rabbits are for a lifetime."
