Crowds filled Wellington's streets today to see rugby sevens teams
from around the world, who have gathered for this weekend's NZI Sevens tournament.
Sixteen teams paraded from the capital's Lambton Quay to Civic
Square, cheered on by thousands of fans both on the streets and waving out of windows.
NZI Sevens general manager Steve Walters estimated there might have been as many as 30,000 people at the parade, with the sun bringing out crowds and excitement.
The Argentinian team led the parade at 12.45pm, accompanied by
Wellington samba band Batucada.
Many cultural groups accompanied the teams, and dancers and entertainers pleased the crowd. "It was fantastic. There was a great spirit," Mr Walters said.
Almost 35,000 people are expected at the tournament this weekend at Westpac Stadium, and police said they were getting prepared.
Visitors were encouraged to dress up but police would be scrutinising costumes, said Inspector Simon Perry, police operations commander for the tournament.
"We're not the fashion police and realise that outfits are a big part of the fun, but anything that looks like a weapon or is dangerous could be mistaken for the real thing and should be left at home," he said.
Mr Walters said people should avoid dressing up in fluorescent yellow, or they could be mistaken for security.
