KEY POINTS:
A West Auckland man who allegedly chased his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend for 8km until the man being pursued crashed into a police station has appeared in court.
The 28-year-old, from Te Atatu, appeared in North Shore District Court following his arrest at the weekend. He faces charges of assault with a weapon, intentionally damaging a car, reckless use of a car and assaulting a female.
He was remanded in custody and will re-appear for a bail hearing tomorrow.
He was granted interim name suppression.
Police said further charges of endangering transport were possible.
It had been reported that the man being pursued had no brakes other than a handbrake to slow him down after he left his girlfriend's place in Paremoremo.
When he stopped to check the car, a man allegedly approached him with a screwdriver.
The offender then allegedly attacked the car with the screwdriver once the victim leapt back into the car.
The victim was then chased through the North Shore before he crashed into the North Shore Policing Centre to seek help.
Police have said the victim's car had its brake cables cut.
