A MYSTERY Masterton woman has donated funds toward a police surveillance camera to watch over the vandal-plagued Kids Own Playground in the town. But more money is needed from the community before the system can be installed, said Masterton deputy mayor Garry Daniell. Mr Daniell said there are four cameras needed tocover known trouble spots ?V two in the Queen Elizabeth Park area and two in the central business district in the town ?V at a cost of $60,000. The woman did not want to be named, he said, and had made the contribution out of concern over vandalism of the playground in the past few weeks. "The donor deserves our gratitude but the remaining cost for the cameras has to be likewise borne by the community and not out of the police budget," he said. The Masterton District Council and other organisations in the town have funded the present eight-camera surveillance network in the central business district, he said. "The tagging and vandalism in certain parts of the town is distressing and the 24 hour surveillance by the cameras will enable the police and community patrols to react, and for culprits to be identified." ???nAny organisation or individual wanting to donate funds toward the cameras may contact Mr Daniell through the Masterton District Council offices, 378 9666.
