A woman was kidnapped and sexually attacked after her boyfriend was dragged from the car they were sleeping in and beaten by a group of men.
The 20-year-old woman, from Glen Innes, and her 21-year-old boyfriend, from Takanini, were asleep in the man's car in a public carpark on a corner
of Caspar Rd and Great South Rd, in Papatoetoe, when they were attacked on Sunday morning.
The pair had been at a party in Glen Innes before dropping some friends off home. They had then driven to Papatoetoe to pick up another friend and, while waiting, had fallen asleep.
Detective Senior Sergeant Bernie Hollewand, of the Counties Manukau crime squad, said three men approached the car about 5 am.
They dragged the boyfriend from the car, beat him and stole his wallet, watch and shoes. Two of the men then stole his car, with the girlfriend still in it. One man indecently assaulted her in the back seat as the car was driven away.
The car was followed by another vehicle possibly driven by the third man who took part in the assault. About a kilometre away, on Cornwall Rd, the abductors drove the stolen car into the driveway of Papatoetoe East Primary School.
One dragged the woman out and indecently assaulted her.
"She screamed and resisted and the neighbours fortunately came to her assistance," said Detective Senior Sergeant Hollewand.
The men escaped in their own vehicle.
Detective Senior Sergeant Hollewand said the woman was extremely shaken but not seriously injured. Her boyfriend, though hit several times, was not too badly hurt.
At least three men were involved in the attack and possibly a fourth in the following car, a white or light blue hatch-back like a Toyota Corolla.
The victims had described the men as Polynesians and believed they spoke Tongan.
Inquiries were continuing.
Detective Senior Sergeant Hollewand said the attack matched no other and might have been a group of guys taking their chance after seeing the car in the carpark.
