Until her last moments, Maureen Valerie Fletcher's life was built around caring for others.
The 75-year-old died when the roof of the Tasty Tucker Bakery and Coffee Bar in Sydenham collapsed in the Christchurch earthquake.
She spent the time before she died speaking to an elderly couple she did not know. They were later found alive in the wreckage of the building.
Maureen's son, Rodney Fletcher, said his mother was a spiritual woman who was always focused on being involved with and helping others.
She worked at the Waiwera Ashram for 18 years until age and ill health forced her to retire.
Her job there was making sure life was comfortable for the many people who would come to stay.
"She tried to help as many people as she could. That is something she has passed on."
She loved to wear bright colours to show how happy she was. Elizabeth Kyle - who knew Mrs Fletcher for about 30 years - described her friend as an angelic, loving and beautiful person.
"She wore light, bright, happy rainbow colours - a reflection of herself and attitude to life. She was always thinking of others' wellbeing."
Maureen is survived by her three children and 11 grandchildren.
