Gregory James Tobin, 25, is thought to have been working at Joe's Garage, in the central business district when the earthquake struck.
His death was confirmed by police on March 6, 2011.
Gregory, from Tadcaster in North Yorkshire, was on an around-the-world holiday with close friends.
Friend Rosemary Devaney told a British newspaper: "He was supposed to go to America, but funds stopped him. The others went on."
A former British soldier, Gregory had also trained as a chef.
A statement from Gregory's family, released by the British High Commission, thanked the city of Christchurch and the international community for their "help and generosity through these darker times".
"As we mourn the loss of our son and brother Greg Tobin, we remember his vibrance and social spirit which we have come to realise embodies this entire island and is the reason why Greg felt comfortable enough to call Christchurch his home."
Friend Katy Stripe paid tribute to Gregory shortly after the earthquake, saying: "What a sad morning. My heart goes out to the family of my friend in New Zealand. Hope to everyone in Christchurch rebuilding their lives."
