Man seriously injured following explosion at Wellington holiday park

A man is being treated for burns and a broken leg after an explosion at a holiday park in Lower Hutt.

A Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said the explosion at the Wellington TOP 10 Holiday Park on Hutt Park Rd was witnessed by fire crews at a nearby station at approximately 3.20pm this afternoon.

"Crews have responded and have arrived to find that there was an explosion due to welding," he said. "A small fire had broken out."

"One person had been injured with burns and a broken leg. We are there still with ambulance attending to the patient."

A Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed they were in attendance at the incident and were treating one male patient in a serious condition.

She said the patient was being treated on the scene but would be transferred to hospital.

The park operations manager, who didn't give his name, said the incident was under control.

"It's just my son, he's all right.

"He's gone to hospital, got some burns, but he's all right.

"That's all you're going to get from us."
