A cyclist killed at a busy Napier intersection was a Mount Mauganui man who regularly visited the area with his wife.

Murray Anthony Reid, 75, died after he was struck by a light truck at the intersection of SH2b and Meeanee Quay about 5pm yesterday.

Police said Mr Reid and his wife, who were staying nearby, appeared to have been walking their bikes across the busy road when the crash happened, despite the truck braking heavily to avoid the collision.

Mr Reid was taken to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital but died a short time later.
Police today said Mr Reid and his wife Glenys were regular visitors to Napier.

Mrs Reid said: "Cycling was a recreation we both enjoyed in an area we loved to return to as often as we could."

This intersection is in the top five for serious and fatal crashes in the country, and was the scene of a near-fatal collision between a logging truck and a car only a few months ago.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has plans to have a roundabout installed at the intersection, which has claimed lives in the past, in 2016-2017.
