A man is dead following a gang-related shooting at Wairoa, 100km south of Gisborne, today.
Inspector Waata Shepherd of the Gisborne Police said the shooting followed a rival gang confrontation outside the Wairoa courthouse this morning.
Wairoa police launched a homicide investigation following the shooting.
Four people were injured in the confrontation. One of the injures is in a serious condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital.
"At this time it is not known if the two incidents are directly related," said Detective Inspector Godfrey Watson in a statement.
Members of the police armed offenders squad from Gisborne and Hawke's Bay are in the town, which is 100km south of Gisborne and 118km northeast of Napier.
Another man who was stabbed in the confrontation between 20 to 30 people was flown to hospital in a serious condition.
