Man committed for trial in case of murdered pensioner

A 32-year-old Hamilton man was today committed for trial on a murder charge after a depositions hearing in the Hamilton District Court.

Dion Mark McQueen, unemployed, is charged with murdering 70-year-old Hamilton pensioner Paropkari Lal on September 16.

The body of Mr Lal was found in Hamilton's Ferry Bank park that morning.

McQueen's counsel, Christopher Harder, conceded there was a case to answer, and the evidence of 42 witnesses was handed to the court in written form.

McQueen pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to Waikato Hospital's Henry Bennett psychiatric facility.

He will appear again in the High Court at Hamilton in April.
