It will be early August at least before a decision is made on the future of Makoura College with options before the public by the end of next week.
In a media release yesterday Makoura College board of trustees chairman Lindsay Gribben said they plan to release a report with options for further consultation before the end of the school term on July 4.
"We are hoping to make a final decision by August 5 but are flexible if it means long term gains for secondary education in Masterton."
The Wairarapa Teen Parent Unit whose facility operates from Makoura College is feeling the uncertainty of the college's future.
In a newsletter this week, teacher in charge, Rae McKenzie says the unit "shares the pain and uncertainty felt by all associated with Makoura College during this difficult time of threatened closure."
"We are fortunate that we will still remain viable if the worst scenario happens and the college closes."
She said the unit must be attached to a state secondary school and, if necessary, the situation would be negotiated but the facility would remain on the same site.
"Although this is good news for us I feel for all those involved with Makoura. I have been a member of staff for 32 years and Makoura College has played a huge part in my life."
She says the possible closure has come about for varying reasons, one of which is the location of the college.
"The Masterton community has always differentiated between the east and west side of town, the west being the right side of town to live in. Unfortunately Makoura is on the east," she said. "Need I say more?"
Makoura options due out soon
