"Thought someone was in the house! Even had things fall over in the garage," another said.
GNS duty seismologist John Ristau said the reason many people felt the quake was that it was quite shallow and very close to Rotorua, about 5km southeast of the city.
"For a small earthquake like that, if it's located quite close to you many people would feel it.
"We have had 727 'felt' reports, but three minutes before that there was a small shake near Seddon, so it's hard to say if they were all reported from the same quake," he said.
