Kuranui College has opened the doors of a high-tech science and mathematics block that seals the first phase of a $1.8 million rebuild at the South Wairarapa school.
Principal Geoff Shepherd said: "[The Ruamahanga building] continues our push to provide innovative 21st century teaching with the completion of a modern,
custom-built building to help deliver our science and mathematics curriculums."
There were plans to build two art rooms and demolish a second Nelson block during the next three years as part of the rebuild.
Mr Shepherd said it was hoped the building would raise the profile of science and be an incentive to the growing number of students opting for science at Level 2 and 3.
There were now 14 students studying at Level 3 this year, while 25 students are studying biology, physics (26) and chemistry (27) at Level 2 and the college expects to see at least a fifth of its Year 13 students continue with science in 2013.
