Photos of royalty in any state of undress are a prime objective for the paparazzi who are watching their every move. Reason being, of course, they are guaranteed to sell well to the many tabloids and magazines desperate to enhance their circulations.
Damning these photographers as "sleaze balls" won't stop them from going about their work. For people like William and Kate they have to be accepted as part of the scenery, like it or not.
And, sadly, that means even when they are not on public duty and simply enjoying their own company they still have to be wary of prying eyes.
There is a funny side to this whole episode though.
The widespread condemnation from the British media at Kate's predicament rings of hypocrisy.
Is there any other country in the world where so-called celebrities are more mercilessly hunted down and their frailties exposed through words and photographs?
And it's not as if the royal family are totally exempt from such treatment either, ask Prince Harry what he thinks about their attitude when images of him partying naked in a Las Vegas hotel room were made available to them. Wasn't he in a private space as well?
It has often been said the biggest cost of fame is the loss of privacy and the latest incidents involving Kate and Harry are just another example of how true that is.
