Jury out in baby shaking trial

The jury in the toddler shaking trial at Christchurch District Court retired to consider its verdict at 1pm today.

A 24-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to intentionally or recklessly causing grievous bodily harm to the 17-month-old girl - the daughter of his girlfriend.

All three have name suppression.

The toddler was left with brain injury and permanent damage, after the accused allegedly assaulted her while she was having a time-out in a bedroom for being naughty.

The Crown said the toddler must have been shaken and slammed against a soft surface.

But defence counsel Richard McGuire said the girl's injury may have resulted from a short fall from furniture.
