Jet fighter crash lands

A Hawker Hunter jet fighter, the only one in the country, crash-landed at Ardmore Airport in south Auckland yesterday afternoon.

"There was a hell of a noise and it came scraping in, sparks flying all over the place," said witness Blair McStay.

Other witnesses said the aircraft did not seem to have its wheels down.

Pilot and owner David Phillips, of Clevedon, jumped out of the plane once it came to a halt with debris strewn over the runway.
