A reader spotted what is a deliberately misspelled shop window sign at a bakery in Green Bay. "The owners said it proved people do read and take notice of signs, as they were inundated with comments - and sold lots of their prize-winning pies!"
Life in perspective
George D. Henderson says when a person marries and has children and a steady job they are certainly middle-aged as that is the middle part of one's life: "Childhood and young adulthood = no responsibilities and low productivity; maturity = all responsibilities and high productivity; old age = no responsibilities and low productivity."
In one era, out the other
Michael received his Super Gold Card yesterday. "I'm buggered if I am moving into 'old age' so I have adopted an historical perspective. What follows the Middle Ages? The Renaissance and the Enlightenment! (Then comes the Industrial Revolution when we bolt bits on to keep functioning.)"
Taming road hogs
Anne Martin of Helensville writes: "An elderly relative's car broke down in a busy intersection and the following driver sat hooting furiously. She got out of her car and went back and 'had a word'. Red-faced and contrite, he helped her get her car started. I think some of these road-hog types are brave only when protected by their metal armour."
Father's Day fiasco
Pete writes: "More than 200,000 vehicles travel the Newmarket viaduct on a typical day. The Transport Agency is recommending people on the isthmus not to travel at all on Sunday! But as it's Father's Day there will definitely be people on the move."
The long and winding road
Brendan reckons Alasdair's punishment for saying the fuss about the Father's Day road closure is unnecessary should be to drive from the North Shore to Manukau using one of the alternative routes.
Look but don't touch
A grandfather bought a 'You Are 2 Today' birthday card - only to find a note on the back saying: "Not suitable for children under 3." Stunned Steve Lock, of the UK, claims the world has gone "health and safety mad". But a spokesperson from the card company said: "A card is for display, not a toy. It is suitable to be given to a 2-year-old to be displayed on a mantelpiece but not suitable for a 2-year-old to play with." (Source: Metro.co.uk)
