Incorrectly installed water heater cause of gas leak

A gas leak which left a Waikato family in hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning was caused by an incorrectly installed and poorly maintained water heater.

The findings follow an investigation by the Energy Safety Service, which was called to a Glen Massey home after the leak in July.

The family members were all released from hospital several days after the incident. A new water heater has been installed.

Energy Safety Service operations manager Graham Boxhall said the leak was an important reminder for people to have their gas appliances checked regularly.
