One of New Zealand's best known criminal lawyers and the former co-leader of the Maori Party are among the 183 Kiwis recognised in the New Year's Honours list announced today.

Peter Williams, QC, who is a relentless campaigner for prisoner rights, is one eight new knights, while Tariana Turia becomes a dame (see full list below).

Other notable recipients in the list include cancer researcher Murray Brennan, Pike River survivor Daniel Rockhouse, architect Ian Athfield, former All Whites star Ivan Vicelich and actress Lisa Harrow.

Ms Turia, 70, who is appointed dame companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services as a Member of Parliament, told the Herald that while humbled by the recognition she was unsure at first whether she would accept it.

"In the first instance I thought I might not take it but they [her whanau] said it's not really for me, it's for our whanau, hapu and iwi - for all the people I have worked alongside," she said.

"It's a shared thing so I guess when you look at it in that context it does make it easier to give consideration to accepting it."

The now retired politician added: "I don't know what it would change for me. It's highly unlikely anything would change for me because essentially all my life I've been a pretty ordinary person who lives a very ordinary life and I don't anticipate any of this will change."

Mr Williams told the Herald that his honour was a complete surprise, and the he felt "very humbled" and "very privileged".

"It was completely unexpected, it came right out of the blue ... it gave me a bit of a lift, I've been ill for some time with cancer, and this gave me a bit of pleasure."
