The jobs of up to 200 IBM staff may be on the line after the collapse of three big computer contracts in New Zealand this year.
Although some staff may be moved to other company jobs - possibly overseas - redundancies are expected to follow the failure ofthe police Incis project, the shutdown of another software project, and the loss of a large Telecom IT contract to rival EDS.
Dozens of private contractors will also lose work: IBM has already said 125 will go from Incis alone.
Questions are being asked about the company's future here. The local arm has had heavy losses for three years running, but the company insists it is here to stay.
