Hip hop to meet heavy metal at the Big Day Out

Big Day Out punters might be surprised to see famous rappers head-banging and rock stars getting down with the home boys tomorrow.

The 12-hour music festival at Ericsson Stadium features more than 60 bands on seven stages. A Herald survey of some of the local artists reveals they will not restrict themselves to their own circles.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing Metallica, Black Eyed Peas, Afrika Bambaataa, SAS DJs, Dawn Raid Showcase and the country's emerging hip hop talent."

Steriogram

"We're looking forward to seeing The Mars Volta. In our humble opinion we think they are the band of the year.

"We also want to see Muse. They are amazing musicians and make big sounds for a group that has only three people.

"Aesop Rock, a group from New York, is another one we will be looking out for. Also, the Darkness from Britain, who are known for having a lot of fun on stage."

"Definitely Metallica because they are the most legendary heavy metal band ever and the Black Album changed my life ...

"The Mars Volta is another one we want to see mainly because they are very clever and tricky in a musical sense, which I can really appreciate.

"I'm also a hip hop fan so will be checking out Black Eyed Peas."

P-Money

"I'm looking forward to seeing Afrika Bambaataa. He's the founding father of hip hop so he's going to be someone not to miss. Along with a man by the name of Herc, Afrika invented hip hop."

8 Foot Sativa

"Poison the Well should be good. They are a hardcore band and word is they are going to be very brutal.

Of course there's Metallica - no one should miss that. We'll also be checking out The Darkness, which should be a giggle as they do some really funny stuff onstage."

DJ Sir-Vere

"Afrika Bambaataa is a legend and Metallica is really vibrant so I'm not going to miss their performances.

"While a far cry from hip hop, I can appreciate the quality of a great live band, even if it's hardcore metal."

Mareko

"At the top of my list will be Metallica. East Side Rock and Mr Lif will most probably be my best picks on the hip hop stage, along with Afrika Bambaataa.

"At the last Big Day Out I was a bit disappointed that I didn't make it to Marilyn Manson's performance. I like to be entertained. I like a great show even if it's not rap or hip hop."

Blindspott

"The Bleeders are wicked and we were just on tour with them. Lostprophets is another but they are on the same time as us.

"Deceptikonz and Concord Dawn will also be good to see."
